Obituary

Casey Ryan Smith Ward, 34, of Summerville, wife of Larry Ward, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, February 19, 2023 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, February 25, 2023, at Bethel United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Lawton and Rev. Sid Mims officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Flint Ward, Matthew Cellars, Abby Detloff, Amanda Reeves, Joseph Pickett and Colin Dunn.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Pete Bazzle and the ladies of Bethel United Methodist Church who have helped us during this difficult 3 years.  Visitation will be Friday evening from 5:00-7:00 PM at Bryant Funeral Home, St. George.

Casey was born on July 20, 1988, in North Charleston, a daughter of Randy Smith and Kimberly Smith.  She was 2006 graduate of Dorchester Academy where she was an all star softball player and played volleyball.  She graduated from Grady EMS Academy in Atlanta, Georgia and received her Paramedic certificate.  She was a beloved paramedic at Grady EMS as well as Dorchester County.  She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.  Casey has fought her battle for 3 years with a very rare form of bile duct cancer.  Our friends and family are devastated by her loss.  Casey’s faith, strength and resolve have been tested several times but she stayed strong with her faith.  She fought hard with her cancer battle doing some of her own research.  When she was 15 she was in a tragic ATV accident where she had to have her pelvis fused along with 9 back surgeries and grilling recovery. Doctors told her she may never walk again or have children.  Doctors didn’t know our Casey or her strength and determination.  Throughout her fight she has amazed doctors time and time again finding new treatments and drugs.  Her fight with rare cancer and research and will hopefully save others from this disease.  We have no words as to how much we all love her, will miss her and our hearts are broken.

Surviving is her husband, Larry Alden Ward; children, Reagan Harleigh Ward and Layton Rene Ward, all of Summerville; her parents, Randy and Kimberly Smith, Ridgeville; sister, Tiffany (Jonathan) Hollis; brothers, Jason (Melissa) Smith and James Smith; grandparents, Carolyn Costello, Charles (Linda) McAhon, Hazel Smith, Lewis and Shirley Smith; aunts, Robin McAhon, Brandi (Ellis) Dunn, Tammy M. Williams;  uncle, Robert W. Smith; nieces and nephews, Wesley Hollis, Jack Hollis, Lucy Hollis, Savannah Smith and Charlotte Smith, Olivia Stroble and Noah Stroble; special cousins, Emily P. Stroble, Joseph Pickett, Colin Dunn, Aaron Dunn, Matthew (Tiffani) Smith and Robbie Smith; in-laws, Sherri G. and Al Ward, Flint and Kimberly Ward and their children, Ailyn and Zachary Ward.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to her children’s college education.
