Princess Anne Cox Gentry, 82, passed away peacefully after a brief illness at Trident Regional Medical Center Saturday, April 6. 2019.
Princess Anne was born July 22, 1936, a daughter of the late Austin Bardy and Maude Elizabeth Watts Cox of near Loris and was raised along with eight brothers and sisters on a Horry County tobacco farm. She was graduated in 1953 from Conway High School. Princess Anne married Lawrence Legrande Gentry of Mount Pleasant in 1954 and spent the next twenty- five years raising a family and traveling to numerous assignments through her husband’s military career, including stints in Columbia, SC, France, Colorado and Missouri. Princess Anne, or P.A., served as a volunteer for many years with the Greenville Memorial Hospital health system, advising and comforting families whose loved ones were to undergo surgery in the heart unit. She was an extremely talented and skilled seamstress and overall creative homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her son, Lawrence Legrande Gentry, Jr., and three siblings, Bonnelle Harrelson, Sara Olson and Needham Jackson (N.J.) Cox.
She is survived by her husband, her son Norman Andrew Gentry and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Jervey Gentry, both of St. George, S.C., grandchildren Alletta Wood Gentry of Orlando, Fl, Anne Watts Gentry of Spartanburg, S.C., Thomas Andrew Gentry of St. George, S.C. and daughter-in-law Karen Gentry of Greenville, S.C.; siblings, Lynwood (Manoli) Cox, Carolyn Stevens, Bobby (Nancy) Cox, Janette (Lester) Blackwell, Roger (Carol) Cox; a number of nieces and nephews. Bryant Funeral Home in St. George, S.C. and Goldfinch Funeral Home of Conway, S.C. were in charge of arrangements. Services were held at Good Hope Baptist Church in Conway, S.C. with interment afterwards at the Carter Family Cemetery.
