George Herbert Axson, 86, of St. George, widower of Edith Axson, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, January 2, 2019.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Memorial Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Clay Shook officiating. Burial will follow in the St. George Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Alton Schipman, Ron Axson, Chris Walters, Jamie Walters, Ty Ellefson and Robert Wolfe. Visitation will be Friday evening from 5:00-7:00 PM at Bryant Funeral Home.
George was born on November 28, 1932 in Elloree, a son of the late Herbert Lever and Carrie Adelle Dantzler Axson. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was the owner of George’s Nursery, George’s Bizzy Bee, part owner of Walter’s Red & White and Walter’s Piggly Wiggly in St. George. He was a member of Memorial Baptist Church where he served as a former deacon, a Master Bee Keeper, and a charter member of the Lowcountry Bee Keeper Association. He was an avid fisherman and shrimper. He was predeceased by a daughter, Laurie A. Seabolt and siblings, Herbert Lever Axson, Jr., Barbara Ann Wolfe, Carrie Lou Helmly and Shirley A. Bennett.
He is survived by his sons, Herbert McCrae (Elaine) Axson, St. George and George Herbert “Bert” Axson, Jr. (Laura Riley), Charleston; grandchildren, Erica (Alton) Shieder Schipman, Emily Taylor Seabolt, George H. “Tripp” Axson, III, Stephen Joseph Axson; great-grandchildren, Emma Ann Schipman, Elizabeth Laurel Schipman, William Knight Schipman and Wyatt Wayne Seabolt.
