Eugene T. Meyer

September 13, 1929 ~ June 28, 2017 (age 87) 87 Years Old

Eugene T. Meyer, 87, of 209 Charles Street, St. George, widower of Betty Carole Proctor Meyer, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at the Veterans Victory House.

Funeral Services will be held 4:00 PM Friday, June 30, 2017 at Memorial Baptist Church, 101 May St., St. George with the Reverend Dr. Clay Shook officiating.  Burial with Military Honors by the Marines will follow in the St. George Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Dwayne Windham, Butch Proctor, Dr. Scott Garris, Russell Weathers, Pete Weathers and Mike Thomas.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Tyler Meyer, Timmy Wilson and members of the Wilson Patrick Sunday School class. Visitation with family and friends will be held before the service from 3:00-4:00 PM.

Gene was born on September 13, 1929, in Allendale, SC, a son of the late Earl Thomas and Minnie Lylete Shaw Meyer.  He was a graduate of Allendale High School in 1946 and moved to St. George Thanksgiving day in 1946.  He attended North Greenville Jr. College for one year.  He was predeceased by brothers, Wayne Meyer and Preston Meyer of St. George.  He was a member of Memorial Baptist Church since 1946 and was a member of the Wilson Patrick Sunday School Class and served in various church committees throughout the years.  He served in the US Marine Corps from 1948-1952 and had boot training at Paris Island then radio school at Oceanside, Calif.  He then went to Camp Lejuene, NC as a radio operator with Amphibian tractors.  He was in the Korean War for 14 months.  His most memorable event was participating in the Inchon landing and discharged from USMC in 1952.  He met Betty Carole, a soda jerk at Cash Drug Store and married in 1957.  He worked at Carolina Girls Wear for 14 years with Betty Carole in the shipping department and then a job at Charleston Naval Shipyard.  He worked there 20 years in Public Works as a sign painter.  He always loved bream fishing at Stump Hole Landing with a cane pole and crickets.  He also liked drawing, painting and clay sculpting. 

He is survived by his daughter, Melanie (Wilbur) Pendarvis, of St. George; a son, Brett (Kristi) Meyer of Summerville; a grandson, Tyler Meyer of St. George; a granddaughter, Emma Albright of Summerville; a brother, Covert “CoCo” (Yvonne) Meyer, Nashville, NC; cherished nephews, nieces and cousins. 

The family wishes to thank the staff of St. George Health Care Center, Magnolias Assisted Living of Santee and the Veterans Victory House in Walterboro for their dedicated and outstanding care.
